Online Magazine and Newspaper Databases Provided by the COS Library

    The COS Library subscribes to a number of magazine and newspaper databases that are linked on the Electronic Resources Web Page.  Two full-text databases that will be especially useful for locating articles about Tulare County are:

  1. The Fresno Bee

  2. The Los Angeles Times

The COS Library does not subscribe to a database that provides full-text articles of the Visalia Times Delta or other Tulare County Newspapers. Located in the Periodicals Department on the library's first floor are the following local newspaper in paper format with their retention schedule.

  • The Fresno Bee - Current 2 months

  • Hanford Sentinel - Current 2 months

  • Los Angeles Times 1980+ on microfilm

  • San Francisco - Current 2 months

  • Tulare Advance Register - Current 2 months

  • Valley Voice - February 1985+

The Visalia Public Library has the Visalia Times Delta on microfilm back to 1880.  However there is no indexing to locate articles on a specific topic.

Local Museums and Libraries

  • Annie Mitchell History Room:  The Visalia Public Library has a room that is dedicated to the history of our surrounding area. The hours are not the same as the rest of the library so be sure to call and find out when it is open. A wealth of information can be found here.

The Great Valley Center - This organization's mission is to support the economic, social and environmental well-being of California's Great Central Valley. This is a good place to start for on overview as well as specific information on agriculture, arts & culture, civic behavior, education, employment, healthcare, land use, population characteristics, resources & the environment, technology and youth development.  There are a couple of ways to obtain information from this web site :

  1. To focus on our area type "Tulare County" or a city name such as Visalia in their search engine box.

  2. Click on Publications on the left hand menu then choose a specific subject area such as youth development.

California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley - The California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley was created by Governor Schwarzenegger when he signed Executive Order S-5-05. The partnership brings state agency secretaries and Central Valley representatives together to make recommendations to the Governor regarding changes that would improve the economic well-being of the Valley and the quality of life of its residents

California's San Joaquin Valley:  A Region in Transition - (2005) A Congressional Research Service (CRS) Report  for the U.S. Congress

San Joaquin Valley:  Land, People and Economy - (2005) A California Research Bureau Report (CRB). The report summarizes statistics for the eight counties of the San Joaquin Valley.  Topics include land use, population characteristics, employment, and industry.  Statistics are drawn from public sources, primarily federal and state, and displayed in charts for the region as a whole and for each of the regional counties.
