Book Reviews

A book review generally announces the publication of a new book, gives some idea of what it is about, and evaluates it. Book reviews cover a wide variety of books--fiction, nonfiction, popular, scholarly--and are usually brief. Literary criticism generally analyzes works of literature, past or current, as works of art, according to any of a variety of theories--for instance, structuralist, feminist, psychoanalytic, Marxist,--sometimes at great length. For literary criticism of a work ask for librarian help at the information desk. For recent book reviews check the sites below. • New York Times Books includes complete Sunday Book Review and a searchable archive of over 50,000 NYT book reviews. You must register to use this site but it is free so far.

• Internet Public Library Online Literary Criticism Collection  This literary metasite contains over 1,000 annotated metasites and articles devoted to literary criticism, biographical and other information about 123 authors from Dante Alighieri to Arthur Miller. Some of the links have access restrictions. There is also a guide to print resources on the topic. Be warned that many of these sites contain only a summary of the story or limited criticism.

COS English Division On the English Division Home page is a link entitled Language Arts Syllabi Online. This will take you to a site with links to the instructors in the English Division that have Home pages. These instructors have more than just their syllabi listed.
