General Biographies

  • Biographical Dictionary - This dictionary includes more than 24,000 notable men and women who have shaped our world from ancient times to the present day.
  • Biography.com - This biography database is from the Cambridge Biographical Encyclopedia. It provides over 20,000 paragraph length biographies of the greatest names, past and present, at your fingertips.
  • Dead People Server - In the author's own words this database "is simply a list of interesting celebrities who are, or might plausibly be dead, and even those who have been spaced, with information as to who has really Rung Down the Curtain and Joined the Choir Invisible, and who's Just Resting."
  • Information Please - People - This site includes 30,000+ short biographies of people in the following subject areas:  Sports, Entertainment, Presidents, Vice Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, Business Leaders, People in the News, World Rulers, Deaths in 2000, Deaths in 1999.
  • Meet the Writers - from Barnes & Nobles.  Includes a very short biography and sometimes an interview with various popular authors.
  • Who's Who in American History - Covers the American Civil War to the present with short biographies and a picture when available.
  • World Leaders -Chiefs of  state and cabinet members of foreign governments

Inventors, Mathematicians and Scientists

  • Biographies of Mathematicians - Indexes biographies alphabetically and chronologically and identifies female mathematicians. Includes birthplace maps and some have portraits. Additional references to book and articles sources are cited. This is an excellent resource.
  • Invention Dimension: Inventors Archives - Search by inventors name or by invention.
  • National Inventors Hall of Fame - Indexes alphabetically by inventor's name, by date of induction, and by invention.
  • Profiles in Science - This site makes the archival collections of prominent twentieth-century biomedical scientists available to the public through modern digital technology. The collections have been donated to the National Library of Medicine and contain published and unpublished materials, including books, journal volumes, pamphlets, diaries, letters, manuscripts, photographs, audio tapes, and other audiovisual materials.

Musicians, Artists and Photographers

  • Classical Composers' Information Archive - Provides a brief biographical sketch and black and white photographs or portraits of approximately 1,000 classical composers.
  • A History of Photography - On the column to the left click look under the category Significant People.  This site provides pen-portraits of many of the most important photographers of the period, and contains information on some of the most significant processes used during the early days of photography.

Political Leaders

  • The First Ladies of the United States - A portrait and biographical sketch of each First Lady from the White House web site.
  • Presidents of the United States - A portrait and biographical sketch of each President from the White House web site.
  • World Statesmen - This "is an attempt at a comprehensive and accurate list of the heads of state and heads of government for all countries and territories, going back to about 1700 or...earlier." Most entries also include brief historical outlines, flags, and links to national anthems and constitutions. There are lists of leaders of international organizations, war and colonial indexes, information on titles of nobility (in Introduction), a bibliography, and links to related resources.

Religious Leaders

Women

  • Celebration of Women Writers - An excellent list of women writers. Indexed by author name, century, or country of origin.
  • Distinguished Women of Past and Present - this site provides links to biographies on women writers, educators, scientists, heads of state, politicians, civil rights crusaders, artists, entertainers and others found of the Internet.
  • The New York Times Magazine: Heroine Worship - Profiles famous women, from Amelia Earhart to Sophia Loren to Virginia Woolf. Includes Britannica biographies, and, when available, past NYT articles, videos, etc
  • Women's International Center - Biographies of women who have received the Living Legends Award.and the Birthdate Calendar Index, with around 1,000 notable women in it, lets you see who shares your birthday
  • Women Physicists - Biographies of 20th century women physicists.
