Library Guides: Human Relations in Business
Developed by Gina Haycock, Librarian Books - COS Catalog Unless you know the author or title of a specific book on your topic, in book catalogs, it is best to do a browse (subject/topic search). The catalog browse search uses controlled vocabulary. Some subject headings (search terms) you could use in our catalog are as follows:
Periodicals (Journals, Magazines, and Newspapers) The library subscribes to 16 periodicals on the topic of business: Business
Periodical Databases
This database defaults to a subject search and is a good starting point because it gives sub-headings that help to narrow and focus the topic. Related topics are also provided. NOT ALL the articles are full-text, but a search can be limited to full-text only. Once the search is limited to specific key words, this database will be helpful because one of its main areas of coverage is business. Also all the business articles in this database are full-text.
Academic Abstracts
- This database indexes over 950 periodicals from 1984 to the
present. It will identify the periodical titles that the COS Visalia Library
owns. Of the 950 periodicals indexed approximately 480 have the complete text
of articles back several years. (Annual Cost $2,999)
SIRS (Social Issues
Research Series) - SIRS
contains all full-text articles from a variety of newspaper and magazines
covering current social issues.
(Annual Cost $1440) Web Sites And Web Searching T he Librarian's Index to the Internet is an annotated subject directory to the Web. Browsing a subject directory can be useful when you don't have a specific topic in mind. For example, from the link: Business, Finance, & Jobs there are links to about 40 different sub-topics such as: Violence & Bullying at Work This link then provides links to four sites on this specific topic. A Directory can lead you to a topic that you might not have thought of your own.If you already know a topic you want to search, general search engines such as google.com will probably give you good results. Choose your search words carefully and make them as specific as possible. For example, in Google, you might try the search: "proselytizing in the workplace". Another search example is "office romance" + personnel management" or another: +"business communication" +"gender differences" or "cross cultural business communication" or "business email etiquette" or "managing your boss" Some Sample Web Sites from these searches: Stopping Office Gossip
