Gateways to Literature and Non-Fiction Collections

  Alex Catalogue of Electronic Texts  The Alex Catalogue of Electronic Texts is a collection of public domain documents from American and English literature as well as Western philosophy

   The Classic Reader  At  this site you can read, search, and annotate great works of literature by authors such as Dickens, Tolstoy, Shakespeare, and many others. The collection currently contains 651 books and 906 short stories by 196 authors. New works are added to the collection on a regular basis, many at the suggestion of readers.

Digital Books  A "Meta-Index" to many eBook sources.  Most of the eBooks are available for free but some have a fee involved.

Directory of Electronic Books   This directory offers annotated links for electronic book information in the categories Free E-book Sites, Free Personal Digital Assistant [PDA] Sites, Commercial Sites, E-book Reader Software, and Dedicated E-book Readers. There are also tips for reading e-books online, searching for text in e-books, and saving e-books. Created Karen Ramos, a librarian at the Stockton-San Joaquin County (California) Public Library.

4Literature  4Literature has more than 2,000 books, stories, poems, plays, and religious and historical documents.

The Internet Public Library: Books  The IPL Books Collection contains over 20,000 titles that can be browsed by author, by title, or by Dewey Decimal Classification.

Making of America    Making of America is a digital library of primary sources in American social history primarily from the antebellum period through reconstruction. The collection is particularly strong in the subject areas of education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology. The book collection currently contains approximately 8,500 books with 19th century imprints.

The Online Books Page  The Online Books Page is a website that facilitates access to books that are freely readable over the Internet. It also aims to encourage the development of such online books, for the benefit and edification of all. Major parts of the site include: An index of thousands of online books freely readable on the Internet;  Pointers to significant directories and archives of online texts; Special exhibits of particularly interesting classes of online books and Information on how readers can help support the growth of online books.

Page by Page   These are electronic versions of hundreds of the "best public domain books, available in easy to read format." Readers can bookmark where they have stopped reading and come back to that page later.

Project Bartleby  Links to verse, fiction and nonfiction.

Project Gutenberg  Over 6000 links to full-text books.

Read Book Online   "Read Books Online" provides the full text of many books, short stories, plays, poems, and essays that are in the public domain.

Renascence Editions   An Online Repository of Works Printed in English Between the Years 1477 and 1799.

Repositories of Primary Resources - A listing of over 5000 websites describing holdings of manuscripts, archives, rare books, historical photographs, and other primary sources for the research scholar.

Searchebooks.com     This search engine uses keyword searching to find websites with full-text documents.

University of California Press   Over 750 online editions are available here through a partnership with the University of California Press and the California Digital Library's eScholarship program. Nearly 400 of the titles are available to the general public; the rest are for University of California faculty, staff, and students only.

The World eBook Library   This site has thousands of downloadable ebooks, including classic works of literature, serials, bibliographies, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and other reference works in a number of languages and countries around the world. You can browse and search by author and title.

Government Documents

Catalog of US Government Publications  an index to print and electronic information

U.S. Government Manual  Comprehensive information on the agencies of the legislative, judicial, and executive branches. This site also contains copies of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.

Authors:

Mark Twain Electronic Texts   This site contains books, short stories, magazine articles, and the written text of many speeches.

The Works of Edgar Allen Poe       This site contains extended biographical essays about Poe's life as well as complete text versions of almost all of Mr. Poe's poems and short stories.

Children's Books:

Children's Digital Library   Picture books in digital format. Currently your computer must have JAVA to view these books.  During the summer of 2003 the delivery format will be changed and the books will be viewable through the Internet Browser.

Digitized Juvenile Literature Collection    Full-text, scanned images of 19th century picture books.

Literature for Children  A growing collection of digitized titles published, predominately in the United States and Great Britain, from 17th through the 20th century.

Rhyme Zone  This site also provides a link to full-text Mother Goose Rhymes

E-Journals:

Directory of Open Access Journals  This service covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals. They try to cover all subjects and languages. "The Directory aims to be comprehensive and cover all open access scientific and scholarly journals that use a quality control system to guarantee the content. All subject areas and languages will be covered."

E-Journals.org  This site provides links to e-journals around the world. The e-journals are divided by broad subject headings.

Electronic Journal Miner

Highwire; library of the sciences and medicine    Access to some traditional print journals in the sciences and medicine. There are some limits on use but it is still impressive.

Making of America   Copies of journals from mid 1800's to 1900. Journals include Vanity Fair, Catholic World, DeBow's Garden and Forest, Ladies Repository, The Old Guard, Overland Monthly, Princeton Review, Southern Literary Messenger and Southern Quarterly Review. The journals may be browsed by keyword, author, title and journal issue.

Ethnic Diversity:

Indigenous People's Literature  From the Main Page, use the drop down menu and click on Choose from Site Index. This site covers a wide variety of ethnic groups including: Arabic, Gaelic, Native Americans, Persian and more.

Newspapers:

Newspapers.com  Locate newspapers from around the United States and the world. This site also includes links to college newspapers, business, entertainment, industry and religion.

Greek Plays            Plays by Aeschylus, Euripides, Sophocles, and Aristophanes

The Plays of William Shakespeare   Each play has its own search engine, concordance, quotes, and other information.

The Academy of American Poets  Click on Find a Poem to reach the archives. You may search by the title of the poem or by the first line of the poem. The site also allows you to browse by title and first line.

American Verse Project   A project to put American Poetry published before 1920 online

Modern American Poetry   This site contains criticism, biographical information and selected poems from modern American poets.

Passions in Poetry    Classical and modern poetry that is organized by theme.

The Unbound Bible  The Unbound Bible is a collection of searchable Bibles consisting of: - 10 English versions including the NASB
   - Greek and Hebrew Versions (the original Bible languages), - 4 ancient versions, & - 42 versions in other languages.

The Koran              The Koran may be searched by keywords or by browsing individual chapters.

Religious Resources  A framed side by side presentation of the King James Version and the Revised Standard Version, the Book of Mormon, Koran, Polyglot Bible (The Gospel of St. Luke): (Old English / Middle English / Early Modern English / Present Day English) at Illinois State University, and Irving Hexham's Concise Dictionary of Religion.
