Student can visit COS Library anytime, from any computer with an internet access. Use this address (URL): http://cos.edu/library/ , choose  Library from the Quick Links on the bottom of COS homepage or type "COS Library" using your favorite search engine (Google, Yahoo, Ask, ...)
Note: MSN"s Live Search always bring up an old webpage (from March 13, 2006) and I don't recommend it.

If you'd like to use the COS Library building the hours are:

  • Monday-Thursday: 7:30am – 8:00pm

  • Friday: 7:30am – 4:00pm

  • Saturday: 10:00am – 4:00pm

Important Phone Numbers:

Reference Desk
737-6179
Call reference desk if you have questions regarding your research; need help finding books or articles; or need passwords for electronic databases.
Circulation Desk
730-3825

Call Circulation desk if you have any questions regarding your library account, book renewal, late fees or books on reserve.

When you need to perform a research for your assignments you can use different library recourses that we mentioned in class:

COS Book Catalog

It is OK to use keyword search, but you may consider other options, too:

Title Search (when you know the title of the book or, at least, some of the words in the title)

Author
Search (when you know the author's name)

Subject Search (if you know the topic or subject that you are researching)

Some things to remember:

Most books about art will be in Oversize collection with and O before their call number (example: O 759.13 T866) which means that they can be found on the second floor of the library and the two last rows of books.

Reference books (art encyclopedias and dictionaries) can be a great start to your research. These books will have R before their call number. Some titles that you may be interested in:
The Oxford Dictionary of American Art and Artists  R 709.7303 M847

The Dictionary of Art  R 703 D554

The Oxford Dictionary of Art   R 703.21 Ox98
Artists from Latin American Cultures : a Biographical Dictionary  R 709.2368 C749
Encyclopedia of Italian Renaissance & Mannerist Art  R 709.45 En56
Encyclopedia of American Art Before 1914   R 709.73 En56
Encyclopedia of Latin American and Caribbean art   R 709.803 En56

As you could probably notice, books about art are in 700 section of the library collection and you are welcome to browse this section to find more titles.

Another option that students have for their library research is
NetLibrary, a collection of more than 6,000 eBooks (books in electronic format).
Students must create an account while on campus.
Here is an example of an eBook from NetLibrary:

Another choice for research would be COS Library's Academic Electronic Databases.
The one that I would recommend is Gale's
Arts and Humanities Through the Eras
Students can either perform their search from the eBooks' search box or choose the artistic period from the dropdown menu first (shown below).
